Best online-only business bank accounts
App-only accounts are cheaper, faster to open and better designed. They also cannot take your cheques, hand you cash, or sit across a desk when something goes wrong.
Our picks
Monzo Business
First of 17 providers for both service and online banking in the independent CMA survey. Pays interest from the free tier and, unusually for an app account, lends.
Starling Business
Free with nothing important behind a paywall, plus an overdraft and cheque imaging that most app accounts cannot match. Pays no interest, though.
Mettle by NatWest
Free forever with a full FreeAgent subscription and 1.46% on savings. The narrowest feature set here — no cheques, no international, no lending.

Licensed bank or e-money firm?
This is the distinction that matters most and gets discussed least. “Online business account” covers two quite different regulatory positions.
Licensed banks — Monzo, Starling, Mettle, Zempler, Allica — hold your money as a deposit protected by the FSCS to £120,000 per eligible depositor.
E-money firms — ANNA, Wise, Airwallex — hold it in segregated accounts at partner banks. That is genuine protection, but recovery runs through an administration process rather than an FSCS payout, and there is no statutory guarantee behind it.
Tide and Revolut sit between. Tide’s newer accounts run through ClearBank and are FSCS-eligible; legacy ones are not, and your sort code tells you which you hold. Revolut’s depends on which entity holds your account after its March 2026 authorisation. See FSCS or safeguarded.
What you give up
- Cheques. Mettle, Tide and ANNA take none. Starling images them; Monzo accepts them in-app to £500 and by post above.
- Cash at volume. Everything routes through the Post Office, with per-deposit or percentage charges and the network’s own limits.
- A person across a desk. Support is good — the CMA data says notably better than the high street — but it is chat and phone.
- Serious lending. Starling and Monzo lend modestly. Asset finance, commercial mortgages and large facilities remain a high-street conversation.
Who should not go online-only
Retailers and hospitality banking serious cash. Anyone paid by cheque with any regularity. Businesses that will need substantial credit in the next two years. And anyone whose sector sits outside app-based providers’ risk appetite — the high street is more willing to have a conversation about it.
For everyone else, the case is straightforward: better service on independent evidence, lower cost, and the same statutory protection provided you pick a licensed bank.
Common questions
Are online-only business accounts safe?
Those from licensed banks — Monzo, Starling, Mettle, Zempler, Allica — carry the same FSCS protection as the high street, up to £120,000. E-money providers like ANNA and Wise do not; funds are safeguarded instead, which is weaker.
Which online business account has the best app?
Monzo, on the only independent evidence. It ranked first of 17 providers for online and mobile business banking at 90% in the CMA-mandated survey published August 2026, with Starling second at 87% and Mettle third at 84%.
Can I pay cheques into an online business account?
Starling images them up to a value limit, and Monzo accepts them in-app up to £500 with larger cheques by post, taking up to four days to clear. Mettle, Tide and ANNA accept none at all.
Do online business accounts offer overdrafts?
Starling and Monzo do. Monzo lends to sole traders up to £3,000 and limited companies up to £5,000, plus loans to £25,000, though priced for speed rather than value. Mettle, Tide, ANNA and Revolut do not lend.
