S Starling

Starling accounting integrations

Not a clever feature. Just the ordinary thing, included free, where competitors charge £108 a year for it.

Our verdict

Usefulness 4.5 / 5

Does this solve a real problem well?

Uniqueness 3.5 / 5

Several rivals do something comparable.

Available on: Free on the standard Business account

What it is

Starling connects directly to Xero, QuickBooks and FreeAgent, feeding transactions into your books automatically. Separately, its own Accounting Essentials tier — also free — covers Making Tax Digital and automated bookkeeping for people who do not use third-party software.

Accounting Plus, at £7 a month, adds VAT recording, calculation and submission to HMRC.

How it actually works

  • A direct bank feed rather than a screen-scraped Open Banking connection, so it is less prone to breaking and re-authorising.
  • Transactions arrive categorised, with receipts attachable in the Starling app.
  • Accounting Essentials is free and covers MTD, which matters now that MTD for Income Tax is catching sole traders above the £50,000 threshold.
  • Accounting Plus at £7 a month handles VAT end to end. That price is scheduled to roughly double from April 2027.
Price the second year Accounting Plus at £7 is good value against a standalone VAT package. At the scheduled £14 it is merely competitive. If you are choosing between Starling’s tier and keeping Xero, compare on the 2027 price rather than today’s.

Who it genuinely helps

  • Anyone already using Xero, QuickBooks or FreeAgent, who would otherwise pay for the privilege of connecting.
  • Sole traders newly caught by Making Tax Digital who do not want a separate software subscription.
  • Businesses that value a feed that does not break. Direct feeds re-authorise far less often than Open Banking connections.

Where it falls short

  • It is not accounting software. Essentials handles bookkeeping and MTD; it does not replace an accountant or a full package for a complex business.
  • VAT filing costs extra, and that cost is rising.
  • Fewer integrations than Tide, which also connects Sage on its free plan.

What else does this

Monzo charges £9 a month for the equivalent integrations on Pro — £108 a year for something Starling includes. Monzo does include MTD software on its free tier, which partly offsets that.

Mettle bundles an entire FreeAgent subscription free, which is worth more again if FreeAgent is your package.

Tide connects Sage, Xero, QuickBooks and FreeAgent on its free plan — the longest list here.

Our verdict

Very useful, and rarer than it should be. There is nothing inventive about a bank feed. What is notable is that Starling gives away what Monzo charges £108 a year for, and does not use it as a lever to push you up a tier.

This is the clearest example of Starling’s general approach: the free account is not a stripped demo, it is the actual product. For a business that runs its books properly, that inclusion is worth more than most headline features.

It does not offset Starling paying nothing on your balance — on a £25,000 reserve that gap is larger than the integration saving. But if you hold little cash and run Xero, this is the strongest free package in the market.

Common questions

Are Starling accounting integrations free?

Yes. Xero, QuickBooks and FreeAgent connect at no cost on the standard free Business account. Starling’s own Accounting Essentials tier, covering Making Tax Digital and bookkeeping, is also free.

Does Starling do Making Tax Digital?

Yes, through the free Accounting Essentials tier. Accounting Plus at £7 a month adds VAT recording, calculation and filing to HMRC, rising to around £14 from April 2027.

Is Starling better than Monzo for accounting?

On cost, clearly — Monzo charges £9 a month for equivalent integrations while Starling includes them. Monzo includes MTD software on its free tier though, and pays interest where Starling pays none.

Does Starling connect to Sage?

Not directly. Tide connects Sage on its free plan; with Starling you would use an Open Banking bridge or export instead.
