T Tide

Tide invoicing

Create, send, match and chase invoices from inside the bank account, on the free plan. For a lot of sole traders that removes a subscription entirely.

Our verdict

Usefulness 4 / 5

Does this solve a real problem well?

Uniqueness 4 / 5

Hard to get elsewhere.

Available on: Free plan

What it is

Tide includes invoicing in the account rather than expecting you to run separate software. You build the invoice, send it, and Tide matches the payment when it arrives — because it is the bank, it can see the money land and reconcile it without a feed.

That last part is the genuine advantage. Standalone invoicing tools have to guess or wait for a bank connection; Tide already knows.

How it actually works

  • Invoice templates with your branding, created and sent in-app.
  • Automatic payment matching against incoming transactions, since the account and the invoicing are the same system.
  • Chasing and reminders for unpaid invoices.
  • Sits alongside expense tools and direct connections to Sage, Xero, QuickBooks and FreeAgent — the longest integration list on any free plan.
  • All on the free tier.
The free plan has a different sting Invoicing is free, but the free plan includes only five free transfers a month, then charges around 20p each. For a business sending fifty payments a month that is £108 a year — coincidentally the same as Monzo Pro. Free invoicing does not mean a free account.

Who it genuinely helps

  • Sole traders and small companies invoicing a handful of clients who currently pay for standalone invoicing software.
  • Anyone who chases payments badly — automated reminders work better than good intentions.
  • Businesses on Sage, since Tide is the only free plan connecting to it directly.

Where it falls short

  • Not a full accounting package. It invoices; it does not do your books.
  • Limited customisation compared with dedicated tools.
  • The transfer allowance makes the free plan expensive for high-volume payers.
  • Protection varies. Newer Tide accounts run through ClearBank and are FSCS-eligible; legacy ones are not. Check your sort code.

What else does this

Monzo includes invoicing on Pro at £9 a month.

ANNA includes invoicing on its free tier alongside better tax tooling, but with no FSCS protection on the balance.

Dedicated software — Xero, FreeAgent, QuickBooks — does far more, and if you already pay for one of them Tide’s invoicing is redundant. Mettle gives you FreeAgent free, which makes the whole question moot.

Our verdict

Genuinely useful and genuinely uncommon on a free plan. The automatic payment matching is the part worth having: because Tide is the account, reconciliation happens without a feed, a bridge or a delay. Standalone tools cannot do that as cleanly.

For a sole trader invoicing a few clients a month, this plausibly replaces a software subscription outright. That is a real saving and it is the strongest argument for Tide.

But judge the account, not the feature. Tide’s free plan has only five free transfers a month and its protection depends on which entity holds your money. If invoicing is what draws you, check whether Mettle’s free FreeAgent would serve you better — that is a whole accounting package rather than one component, on an unambiguously protected account.

Common questions

Is Tide invoicing free?

Yes, invoicing is included on Tide’s free plan. The free plan itself includes only five free transfers a month though, with a charge of around 20p each above that.

Does Tide match payments to invoices automatically?

Yes. Because the invoicing and the account are the same system, Tide sees incoming payments directly and reconciles them without needing a bank feed or manual matching.

Is Tide invoicing enough to replace accounting software?

For a sole trader invoicing a few clients, often yes. It is not a full accounting package and does not do your books. If you need that, Mettle includes a complete FreeAgent subscription free.

Is money in a Tide account protected?

It depends. Newer accounts are provided by ClearBank, a licensed bank, and are FSCS-eligible to £120,000. Legacy accounts issued through an e-money institution are safeguarded only. Your sort code tells you which you hold.
