Starling cheque imaging
Photograph a cheque in the app and it clears without a branch. Unremarkable in 2026 — except that most digital business accounts still cannot take a cheque at any value.

Available on: Free, on the standard Business account
What it is
Starling lets business customers pay in cheques by photographing them in the app, up to a value limit, with larger cheques posted to a freepost address. Money is credited on the standard cheque clearing cycle rather than instantly.
It sounds mundane. It matters because Mettle, Tide and ANNA accept no cheques whatsoever, and for a business paid by cheque even occasionally that single fact eliminates three of the strongest free accounts in the market.
How it actually works
- Photograph the front and back in the Starling app and confirm the amount.
- There is a value limit per cheque. Above it, you post the cheque instead.
- Clearing follows the standard cycle, so funds are not immediate. Budget for the days, not the minutes.
- The cheque must be retained until it has cleared, then destroyed.
- No fee on the standard Business account.
Who it genuinely helps
- Construction, care and professional services, where cheques persist far longer than the market admits.
- Businesses paid by older or public-sector clients, who often still issue cheques as standard.
- Anyone who receives one or two cheques a month and would otherwise need a high-street account purely for that.
Where it falls short
- There is a value limit. Large cheques go by post, which adds days.
- Clearing is not instant. This is standard cheque timing, not a Starling shortcoming, but it catches people expecting app-speed.
- No help if your volume is high. A business banking dozens of cheques a month wants a counter.
What else does this
Monzo also accepts cheques — in-app up to £500 and by post above that, taking up to four days to clear. We had this wrong on the site until a reader corrected us.
Mettle, Tide and ANNA accept none at all, at any value.
The high street — Barclays, Lloyds, NatWest, HSBC — handles cheques at a counter or a machine, which is what a high-volume business actually needs.
Our verdict
Useful precisely because so few rivals bother. Cheque imaging is not clever technology in 2026 — it is a decade old and every high-street bank has it. What makes it worth a page is that three of the four leading free digital business accounts refuse cheques entirely.
So the question is not whether Starling does this well. It is whether you are ever paid by cheque. If the answer is yes even occasionally, your free-account shortlist is Starling or Monzo, and everything else is out regardless of how good it looks elsewhere.
If the answer is no, this feature is worth nothing to you and should not influence the decision at all.
Common questions
Can I pay cheques into Starling business?
Yes. Cheques can be paid in by photographing them in the app up to a value limit, with larger cheques sent by freepost. There is no fee on the standard Business account, and clearing follows the standard cheque cycle rather than being instant.
Which business accounts do not accept cheques?
Mettle, Tide and ANNA accept no cheques at any value. Starling images them, and Monzo accepts them in-app up to £500 with larger cheques by post. The high-street banks all handle them at a counter.
How long do Starling cheques take to clear?
They follow the standard UK cheque clearing cycle rather than clearing instantly. Plan for days rather than minutes, and keep the cheque until it has cleared.
Is there a limit on Starling cheque imaging?
Yes, there is a per-cheque value limit, above which you post the cheque instead. Limits are revised periodically, so confirm the current figure in the app if your cheques are near the threshold.
