Business bank accounts for bad credit

Before you assume you need a specialist account, read this: most business account declines have nothing to do with your credit file, and the actual cause is usually fixable in an afternoon.

Our picks

Zempler Bank

3.2 / 5

Accepts applicants the mainstream declines and — unusually for this corner of the market — holds a full banking licence, so your balance is FSCS-protected rather than merely safeguarded.

Your credit file is probably not the problem

A business current account is not a credit product. Providers are not lending you anything, so creditworthiness matters far less than most people assume. What actually stops applications:

  1. Your details do not match Companies House. A different spelling, an old registered address, a middle name included in one place and not the other. This is the single most common cause.
  2. Your SIC code is on a higher-risk list. Often chosen carelessly at incorporation and not describing the business at all. See what a SIC code is.
  3. Your registered address cannot be verified — typically a formation agent’s mailbox.
  4. A director or shareholder is overseas. For some providers this is a hard rule, not a risk judgement.
  5. Your business description does not explain the money. “Consultancy” tells an onboarding team nothing.

Fix those before you go looking for a specialist account. Our free company check reads your Companies House record and flags most of them in a few seconds, and why applications get declined has the full detail.

Do not apply to five providers at once Some providers run a credit search, and a cluster of simultaneous applications is itself a risk signal — it looks like someone shopping desperately. Fix the underlying cause, then apply once.

If you genuinely need a specialist

Zempler Bank (formerly Cashplus) weights identity verification far more heavily than credit history. What makes it worth knowing about rather than merely available is that it holds a full UK banking licence, so eligible balances carry FSCS protection to £120,000. Most providers competing for hard-to-bank customers are e-money firms where money is safeguarded instead — a weaker, non-statutory protection.

The trade-offs are real: higher per-item charges, thinner tooling, and no interest on your balance at all. Treat it as a stepping stone rather than a destination.

The eighteen-month plan

Open a specialist account now so you can trade. Keep it impeccably: no returned Direct Debits, no unexplained transaction patterns, consistent activity that matches your stated business. After twelve to eighteen months of clean history, reapply to Starling, Monzo or a high-street bank from a much stronger position — and you will pay considerably less.

Sole traders with poor personal credit

As a sole trader there is no corporate separation, so your personal file is more visible. It still rarely blocks a current account. What it will block is an overdraft, and it may affect the rate you are offered if you later borrow.

Common questions

Can I open a business bank account with bad credit?

Yes. A business current account is not a credit product, so credit history matters less than people assume. Zempler Bank weights identity verification more heavily than credit and holds a full banking licence, so your balance is FSCS-protected.

Which business accounts do not do a credit check?

Several providers use identity verification as the primary gate rather than a credit search, including Zempler, ANNA and Tide. Others run a soft or hard search. Because approaches change, check at the point of application rather than relying on any comparison page.

Why was my business account application declined?

Most commonly a Companies House mismatch, a higher-risk SIC code, an unverifiable registered address, an overseas director, or a vague business description. Personal credit history is a far less frequent cause.

How long before I can switch to a mainstream account?

Twelve to eighteen months of clean trading history is usually enough to reapply successfully to Starling, Monzo or a high-street bank — and you will pay considerably less than a specialist charges.
