The verdict
Barclays does the things digital banks structurally cannot. Over a thousand branches. Cash and cheques over a counter at volume. A named contact when something goes wrong. A route into overdrafts, loans and asset finance without starting a fresh relationship somewhere else.
Twelve months of free day-to-day banking for new businesses is a genuine offer rather than a teaser, and for a start-up finding its feet that first year has real value. The mistake people make is treating it as the price. After the free period a monthly fee applies, and cash deposits are charged per £100 over the counter.
Run the numbers on year two. A consultancy paid by bank transfer will pay the monthly fee for branch access it never uses, and Starling would cost nothing. A café banking £3,000 of takings a week is in the opposite position — the percentage charges at a digital bank would dwarf the Barclays tariff.
That is the entire high-street calculation, and it turns almost exclusively on cash volume. Everything else is secondary.
Who it suits
- Cash-heavy businesses — retail, hospitality, trades — where per-£100 counter charges beat percentage fees.
- Businesses that will need to borrow and want the lending relationship in the same place.
- Anyone who values a branch and a named contact over app polish.
- Start-ups making use of the free first year.
Who should look elsewhere
- Digital-only service businesses. You will pay a monthly fee for branch access you never use.
- Anyone chasing the lowest cost. Starling and Mettle are free permanently.
- Businesses wanting the best app. Competent, but not in Monzo or Starling territory.

The fees that are not in the headline
The monthly fee is what gets advertised. These are the charges that decide what you actually pay.
| Charge | Cost | Who it affects |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly account fee | Free for 12 months, then around £8.50 | Everyone, from year two. Deductible as a business expense. |
| Electronic payments in and out | Free | Most digital-first businesses. |
| Cash paid in over the counter | Around £1.20 per £100 | Retail and hospitality. Predictable per-£100 pricing suits high volumes. |
| Cheques | Per item | Sectors still paid by cheque. |
| Unarranged overdraft | Daily or monthly charge plus interest | Anyone running close to zero. Expensive — arrange a facility instead. |
Applying
Applications can start online or in branch. Barclays uses a tariff calculator on its own site that lets you estimate monthly charges from your expected transaction mix — worth running before you apply.
Expect to provide photo ID, proof of address, Companies House details, expected turnover and information about the nature of the business. Established businesses may be asked for accounts or projections.
Where applications fail
- Companies House mismatch — details must match the register exactly.
- Higher-risk sectors — money service businesses, some crypto activity and adult sectors face heavy scrutiny or refusal.
- Overseas ownership — non-UK directors and shareholders extend checks significantly.
- Unclear source of funds — expect detailed questions if turnover projections look inconsistent with the business type.
Alternatives worth costing
- HSBC — Similar tariff structure with a stronger app-first option in Kinetic.
- Lloyds — Cheaper machine deposits than counter deposits — worth modelling if you can use a machine.
- Starling Business — Free permanently, if you can live without a branch.
Barclays questions
How much does a Barclays business account cost after the free year?
Around £8.50 a month for the standard business accounts, plus transaction charges including roughly £1.20 per £100 of cash paid in over the counter. Verify the current tariff on Barclays' own site before applying — it changes.
Is a Barclays business account FSCS protected?
Yes. Barclays Bank UK PLC holds a full UK banking licence, so eligible deposits are protected up to £120,000 per eligible depositor.
Is the free 12 months worth taking?
It is genuinely free banking, so yes — but choose the account on what year two costs, not year one. Switching later is straightforward but it is admin you would rather not repeat.
Can I open a Barclays business account online?
Yes, applications start online, though more complex structures may need a branch appointment or additional documentation.
Does Barclays lend to new businesses?
Barclays offers overdrafts, loans and asset finance, with lending decisions based on trading history, projections and security. A start-up with no trading history will find it harder, but the relationship route exists in a way it does not at most digital banks.
